FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHAT IS POLISHED CONCRETE?
Say goodbye to waxing! Polishing is the new “in” when it comes to flooring. It is now possible to turn old concrete floors, or new, into a high-gloss, beautiful finish, that never needs waxing. Polished Concrete flooring is the new big deal. Commercial stores, retail stores, office spaces, and even residential homes are jumping on to the smooth and appealing new types of floors.
Keep reading and we’ll answer all your questions about the process and go over an overview of polished concrete floors, including how it’s done, the benefits of, the equipment used, the design options, and any maintenance needed.
HOW DO YOU GET THE SMOOTH FINISH WITHOUT THE WAX?
Machines essentially “shave” off the surface of existing concrete, giving you your desired finished look.
WHAT TYPES OF PLACES USE POLISHED CONCRETE?
- Large commercial warehouses
- Residential homes (especially shops and garages)
- Auto shops and showrooms
- Office spaces
- Large retail outlets (Costco!)
- Medical Facilities
WHY POLISHED INSTEAD OF WAXED CONCRETE?
The main benefit of using polish is its durability and that it’s easy to maintain. With waxing, you have to constantly keep it coated several times a year. Also, polish adds a “beautifying” aspect as well, appealing to your customers, employees, or just yourself.
HOW CAN I USE IT FOR MY RESIDENTIAL FLOORS?
The major benefit of using a polished finish for your home is the cost and time savings! (Extra floor covering materials are costly and are not even necessary when you’re just using the slab of concrete that’s already there.)
Also, since it’s a slab of concrete still, damage to it is almost impossible (especially in a residential home), unlike traditional wood or laminate flooring.
It’s super easy to clean. (There’s no cracks or chips, so there’s nowhere for dust or other allergens to hide.)
And lastly, there are so many ways to customize! (The designs and colors are nearly infinite.)
HOW CAN I USE IT FOR MY COMMERCIAL OR RETAIL STORE?
Ultimately, this type of finish saves you money. Using the immediate slab of concrete is cost-effective and leads to lower maintenance costs.
It has a much longer life compared to waxed flooring. This means it’s highly resistant to high foot traffic and dragging retail cases across the floor. You won’t have to re-wax every time you move those cases!
Polished floors are resistant to moisture. Since concrete is breathable, this removes any issues that may arise from moisture getting stuck under wax coatings.
No harmful chemicals are needed to clean. You won’t have to worry about your customers or employees dealing with awful coating or cleaning smells.
The flooring offers a reflective light quality. This means your store, warehouse, or retail space will appear brighter and lively. Also, this decreases your needs for artificial light, saving you money.
I CURRENTLY HAVE AN OLD CONCRETE FLOOR. CAN IT BE POLISHED?
With proper groundwork, any structurally sound concrete slab can be polished. There are a few exceptions. If you think there might be an issue, it’s best to give us a call so we can determine the best course of action!
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
The jobs will range from the area that needs polished. The more area you have, the cheaper it will be per square foot. But typically it’ll range from $4-$10 a square foot.
CAN I DO POLISHED CONCRETE MYSELF?
Polishing requires the use of heavy machines that are very specialized and used by a professional concrete contractor. I doubt you’ll ever find one at your local rental shop. Also, it takes some expertise to run correctly. We highly suggest to not try it yourself for that reason. We don’t consider polishing a DIY project.
CAN I CUSTOMIZE THE LOOK OF THE CONCRETE FLOOR?
There’s a multitude of customizable options. With several design elements to choose from, such as coloring, borders, grids, radial lines, scoring, bands, and the list goes on! Typically we see stains and color dyes as the most common application for a design element.
The versatility of polished concrete allows you to choose different levels of gloss. To where it can look almost satin-like, to a super high gloss look.
If you’ve seen a design that you want for your home or commercial store, show us and we can match it! (just as long as it really is polished concrete…)
IS POLISHED CONCRETE BETTER COMPARED TO OTHER TRADITIONAL TYPES OF FLOORING?
The biggest benefit when it comes to polished concrete in comparison to other types of flooring is the durability, sustainability, and easy maintenance. Most flooring you have to worry about chipping or scratching, but concrete, as you know, is very resistant! So over the long haul, you can expect to save money and time from not having to replace and clean your floors all the time!
HOW DO I MAINTAIN THE POLISHED FLOORS?
Though polished concrete floors are durable, if you want to keep their shine, it is suggested you do some minor maintenance. Obviously the more traffic, the more maintenance you’ll need to do. Here is a quick checklist for how to maintain:
- Wipe up any dirt and dust with a microfiber towel or broom.
- Mop with a clean, wet, and non-abrasive mop.
- It is ok to use light cleaners to where they lift the dust and grime off the floor.
- Make sure if there are any spills or cleaner left on the surface, you pick it up as soon as possible.
The main thing is to keep dust off the floor with microfiber material and occasionally wipe with a damp mop and clean water. And polished concrete is generally easier to maintain than a floor with wax or coating.
DO I HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT SLIPPING ON A POLISHED CONCRETE FLOOR?
Though the shine of your floors looks smooth as glass, they are safe just like any other type of flat smooth flooring. In comparison to waxed linoleum or marble, polished concrete is less slippery. But as you already know, it is a good idea to prevent slipping accidents.
Keep a routine schedule of maintaining the floor by keeping any spills off the floor, especially if it’s an oily substance.
There are “ant-slip” conditioners on the market. These can be applied to the concrete to improve traction and keep people from slipping. You will have to reapply them occasionally.
We add a “sealer coat” at the end of our job that contains grit that helps keep from slipping. And no, this doesn’t take away from the shine of your new beautiful floors!
CAN I GET COLOR ADDED TO IT?
Applying a dye to polished concrete is becoming ever popular. The great thing about dyes is that there are many options for colors compared to stains. Also, unlike stains, dyes are more predictable when applied, not leaving the chance of an unwanted look. If you’re feeling really decorative, you can apply stains and use dyes as an accent shade, to give you a high-end look.
Dyes work by application just before the final polishing step. The organic pigments penetrate the surface of the concrete and give you the awesome color effect.
It’s best to check with the dye manufacturer for its recommended use. Sometimes the dye can be applied at different times during the polish job.
IMPORTANT: Dyes are not UV resistant. It is highly suggested to only use dyes for indoor applications.
